About us

The Burning Bush Christian Bookshop is run by Billy and Ruth Neill, who took it over in 1991 from its previous owner.

It was in 1991 that Lurgan girl Patricia Moutray, proprietor of the Burning Bush, felt called to a Bible College in England and put the shop up for sale.

"We were challenged as we felt a Christian witness was leaving the town," said Ruth. "As we approached Patricia about the possibility of purchasing the shop, the Lord opened the door wide with a word from Galatians 6:10, and we knew without a doubt this was what He wanted us to do." "Let us do good to all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."

Ruth says she was very nervous about the prospect of taking up the running of the shop, but says God helped her with the work. "I didn't think I would be any good at running a shop. I wasn't a business woman - how could I give up the role of a housewife, a mother with young children? But when God calls He equips. We all think we know where we are going, but only God knows the plans He has for us.

In August 1991, the shop opened under new ownership with two members of staff, working part time. At this time the shop was in Market Square in the town. After two months, the shop moved to 42 Scotch Street and Ruth says: "This was the place God really used to gather people in. There were young people coming in after school and we enjoyed great times of ministry and fellowship."

However, their time running the shop has also provided them with testing times. "Sometimes we felt like the Apostle Paul," says Ruth, "hard-pressed on every side. We served the Lord for 10 years there, when we were told the shop was to be demolished to make way for a new shop to be built there." This was when the shop moved to Lower Scotch Street, where it remains today.

The Burning Bush celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012 with a gospel concert. It was held in Dungannon Leisure Centre on Saturday 24 November, with Robin Mark the man on stage. A number of people told us afterwards how blessed they were by the ministry of Robin Mark and his band!

The shop's ministry has changed over the years, says Ruth, with outreach becoming a big part of the work. "We have tracts and booklets in many different languages, free of charge, which fill the shelves at the back of the shop, encouraging the believers to reach out to the needs of our town."
